Story and Pace.
The first chapter of “Sam” reads smoothly. It is properly paced and nicely constructed. Sam’s character comes across quite well, especially in such small touches as her preference for the velvet bag over the necklace. The denouement is quite unexpected and enjoyable. The plant mentioning Dad at the beginning works well when it later develops that he isn’t in charge of this operation.
