THE PLEDGE UNMADE.

A Gypsy girl did meet a lad

Whose cottage was in town

They fell in love so sweet and mad

Their hearts they did lay down

Hand in hand at forest’s edge

Two lovers made a heartfelt pledge;

The boy remembers to this day

What the Gypsy girl did say-

Oh, come with me where the sky is free

From chimney pots and spires;

Lie with me where the old oak tree

Broods over peat laid fires-

We’ll watch the stars

And touch the rain

And the soaring wings of light-

Stay with me where the sky is free

And I’ll be yours tonight.

The boy did feel his heart afire

And kissed his lady fair

He loved her so he did aspire

To wed her then and there.

Hand in hand at forest’s edge

Two lovers made a heartfelt pledge

The girl remembers to this day

What the village boy did say.

Oh, come with me where the good folk be

And mildly mind the hearth;

Be with me where courtesy

May hold our union fast-

We’ll trim the lamps

And close the doors

Put winter chills to flight-

Live with me where the good folk be

And you’ll be mine tonight.

The Gypsy girl did love her lad

But could not live in town

The village boy so kind and sad

Could not sleep on the ground

Hand in hand at forest’s edge

Two lovers did unmake their pledge;

To others they would give their hearts-

For they knew that they must part.

But - should you linger by the trees

Where the lovers’ made their tryst

Close you eyes and listen well

In the rising of the mist

You’ll hear the voices long ago

As boy and girl did stand

Sadly there at forest’s edge

Hand in trembling hand -

Oh - come with me where the sky is free

And mildly mind the hearth

Be here with me where the old oak tree

Will hold our union fast

We’ll watch the stars

And close the doors

And the soaring wings of light-

So live with me where the good folk be

And you’ll be mine tonight

Oh come with me where the good folk be

From chimney pots and spires

Be with me where courtesy

Broods over peat laid fires

We’ll trim the lamps

And touch the rain

Put winter chills to flight

Stay with me where the sky is free

And I’ll be yours tonight.
