THE KNIGHT’S LADY WEEPS WITH SHAME.
She was a girl of noble birth
As wilful as the day
She saw a knight come riding in
And tumbled into love with him
Of knights she’d met no dearth
For love she’d trade the earth
She lit a candle sweet and white
To wish he’d come to her
The smoke went climbing like a prayer
Wreathing in the autumn air
Pale against the night
She set the candle light
She peeled an apple ripe and red
And tossed the peel behind
It fell into a crooked Ess
Initial of her knight confessed
She toasted him in mead
And grateful tears she shed
She clipped a lock of curling hair
While he did lie asleep
She sewed it in a silken pouch
And kissed it with her hungry mouth
And swore that she would wear
It round her neck so fair
She bought a potion from a dame
And dropped it in his wine
She chanted thrice a binding charm
The dame had sworn ‘twould do no harm
And when he called her name
She knew she had him tamed.
She wed him in the summer’s heat
And now she if his bride
While love and kisses hold him fast
She begs and prays his love will last
But every night she weeps
For shame at her deceit…
