SILVER RIBBONS
If I tied thee a silver ribbon, love
Would it bind thy soul to mine?
A bond transcending centuries
Handfasting us to time-
The link would keep thee by me, love
A heartbeat’s touch away
And so we’d tread the centuries
And stay- oh stay-
Be held by the silver ribbon, love,
The gleaming bond of fate!
But silver tarnishes my love,
Would we find out too late?
If we bound ourselves in rings of iron
Would it strengthen thee, my love?
If rings enclosed the days of life
Thy falcon, thou my dove-
The rings would keep my body thine
And never would I stray-
And so we’d wed the eternal hours
And stay- oh stay-
Be bound by the rings of iron, love
The stalwart clasp of fate!
But iron rusts away, my love,
Might loving turn to hate?
If thou gave me a golden shackle, love,
Would I cleave to thee, so fair?
If we trod in step what dancing days
Of music we could share!
The cost of gold would not be great
It’s a little price to pay-
And so we’d waltz the centuries
And stay – oh stay-
If golden shackles bind us, love
It’s a precious vow to fate,
But gold can be so heavy, love
Could our bodies bear the weight?
I set thee free from the noose of love,
The shackles, rings and thread-
The ties of gilt and the promised gold
Whence all the freedom’s bled-
And I offer thee an open door
And my love along the way
And perhaps thy soul will cling to mine
And stay- oh stay-
If nets of kisses shield us, love,
From capricious quirks of fate-
Let the irony be clear to thee;
We shall reign in love’s estate.
Our time may last for a thousand years
Or a blink in the eye of time
But remember love, thou art free to go
And my soul? Forever thine.
